Robb Recommends: Grand Seiko’s Wintry New Tribute To Nature

The ‘white birch’ timepiece is inspired by the manufacture’s surrounds.

Grand Seiko

Few manufactures can match Grand Seiko’s beautiful array of nature-inspired finishes. Adding to the growing list of unique designs is the Japanese marque’s latest, the Grand Seiko SLGH005 (around £7,500), which, along with an intricate new dial texture brings a new case and dial design to the fore.

The 40mm stainless steel case arrives with sharp faceting across its lugs, mid-case and bezel accompanied by fine vertical brushing and the brand’s signature ‘Zaratsu’ polishing.

However, despite its handsome body, it’s the watch’s dial that draws attention. Here, Grand Seiko has, once again, looked to nature – specifically the ‘Shirakaba’ white birch bark that is local to the manufacture’s studio in Shizukuishi to create a textured dial that calls to mind the much-loved Grand Seiko ‘Snowflake’ dial.

Further, the addition of dauphine hands and wedge indices elevates the appeal while the central blue hands emphasise the icy hues of the white finish.

The watch is powered by the 9SA5 movement – which first debuted in 2020 – and features the brand’s unique dual impulse escapement and 80-hour power reserve. The finish sees polished chamfers visible from the sapphire caseback, while the watch offers 100-metre water resistance.

The timepiece is attached via a three-link bracelet in brushed steel and will be available through Grand Seiko boutiques and authorised dealers in March 2021.
