Leather connoisseurs – and there are plenty out there, among the sartorial cognoscenti – will be aware that goat leather, thanks to a high presence of lanolin, is suppler and softer than most hides, as well as being beautifully grained, tensile, durable, naturally water-resistantand generally very refined and elegant.
That’s why Gerry Ettinger, who founded his eponymous leather accessories company in the 1930s, crafted many of the house’s earliest accessories from refined goat leather: it’s also why the brand’s Capra collection introduced for AW18 – a range of wallets, card holders, coin purses, pouches and purses, all hand-made at the brand’s Walsall factory and featuring a silver embossed Ettinger logo and HRH The Prince of Wales’ Royal Warrant cypher – were made from the same remarkable animal hide, hence the collection being named after the goat’s biological genus.
Now, thanks to the extremely warm response to the collection, Ettinger is adding nine new accessories that are perfect for everyday use and for gifting, not to mention a new colour – forest green – into a mix that already included black, marine blue and tan (white and chocolate options are available in some Capra products on the Ettinger website). The new products include a double watch roll (£285), two zip boxes (£125 and £165), a pill case (£150), a glasses/sunglasses case (£95), a magnetic cash clip (£65) and three types of hip flask (£85, £100 and £135).
On the inside, the products (where appropriate) are lined with a silver-grey Ettinger-monogrammed jacquard lining; to protect the accessories contained within the products, meanwhile, a fine cushioned lining of luxuriously soft tonal pig suede has been fitted. All colour options have the Ettinger logo and Royal Warrant embossed in silver as a natural complement to the autumnal leather tones.
“Since re-introducing goat leather into our portfolio, we’ve been delighted by its appeal and success and so have decided to move some of our other popular products into the Capra Collection to give our customers more variety,” explains Ettinger CEO Robert Ettinger. “Its combined softness and resilience work well for everyday life demands and whilst we eagerly await a return to ‘normal’ life and travel, our customers can choose new personal accessories for themselves or as gifts for family and friends. ‘Buy once, buy well’ remains key to our brand philosophy.”
The majority of the items in the Capra Collection can be personalised with up to five characters in blind, silver or gold emboss (£30).
