Prepare for lift-off with Maison Mumm zero-gravity Champagne

In keeping with its rich history of innovation, Champagne stalwarts Maison Mumm have risen to a bold new challenge: reinventing the timeless Champagne tasting ritual for the new frontier of space and zero gravity.

This September, astronauts and space-lovers alike can experience an outer-worldly experience with the launch of Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar: a ground-breaking feat of technology that enables cosmonauts to raise a glass in zero gravity conditions.

Teaming up with Spade – an innovative agency specialising in unique space design – Maison Mumm’s inventive gravity-defying bottle will be the first Champagne to be served outside the Earth’s atmosphere, adding a rather extravagant twist to interstellar travel.

The high-tech bottle – which took three years to design – is crafted from transparent glass and uses the Champagne’s gas to expel the liquid into a ring-shaped frame, which in zero gravity, looks like a foamy droplet of bubbles. The Champagne droplet (which appears as a fluffy ball of foam) floats magically in the atmosphere until scooped delicately into custom-made cone-shaped glasses. These glasses have been cleverly designed with surface tension, so the floating droplets cling to the glass and stop the Champagne from floating away.

Maison Mumm’s challenge was not only to bring a liquid into zero gravity, but to send a whole celebration experience of Champagne into space. By joining forces with cutting-edge design start-up Spade, this has now become a reality.

Octave de Gaulle, founder of Spade, said that the biggest test was actually getting the Champagne out of the bottle in zero gravity conditions. “For the last 40 years, space travel has been shaped by engineers rather than designers. Instead of seeing zero gravity as a problem to be solved, we look at it as a design possibility. The big design challenge for Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar was actually getting the liquid out of the bottle.”

The foamy droplets can be passed from person to person whilst floating in the air, but once the Champagne reaches the tongue, it transforms back from foam into a smooth liquid. And the taste is much more intense too. The unique, weightless conditions intensify the flavours, says Mumm cellar master Didier Mariotti. “Because of zero gravity, the liquid instantly coats the entire inside of the mouth, magnifying the taste sensations. There’s less fizziness and more roundness and generosity, enabling the wine to express itself fully”.

Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar’s unique wine tasting experience will be served to guests on board zero gravity flights organised by Novespace, with plans to supply space missions and commercial flights in the future.
