Five Wine-Focussed Hotels

For discerning oenophiles seeking alternatives to the usual destinations

Fancy a wine-focussed holiday? Conventional wisdom has you packing off and head for Tuscany, Bordeaux, the Napa Valley or – if you’re up for an even longer-haul journey than that to the latter – perhaps Hawke’s Bay or the Mornington Peninsula Down Under. But there are some top class hotels and resorts around which are perfect for enjoying someone who, to quote Basil Fawlty, “appreciates the boudoir of the grape”. And we’ve picked out the best five…

Cliveden House, Berkshire
An intimate, sultry underground cave, Cliveden House’s Cellar Dining Room is perfect for a more informal setting. Its brick walls, mighty pillars and vaulted ceilings highlight its stake in history. It was once Lord Astor’s private wine cellar, making it ideal for wine tasting. It has been lovingly restored, remaining an unusual and atmospheric function room for smaller parties and private gatherings. clivedenhouse.co.uk

Twin Farms, Barnard, Vermont
Tucked away in the heart of Vermont, Twin Farms offers guests unparalleled luxury – and the wine experience is no exception. The all-inclusive Relais & Châteaux property houses an impressive 15,000-bottle wine cellar, with some of the rarest wines in the world on the property’s Reserve Wine List. There’s also an intimate private dining experience for up to eight guests on offer. Acclaimed Executive Chef Nathan Rich and Sommelier Keven Ring will create a fully customised and seasonal multi-course dining extravaganza in the heart of the cellar. twinfarms.com

Adare Manor, County Limerick
An unlikely wine destination, Adare Manor in south-west Ireland is home to an extensive collection of more than 700 different hand-selected wines including champagne, reds, white, fortified and sake from some of the world’s most legendary vineyards. For a one-of-a-kind experience, wine connoisseurs can dine in the original cellar located in the old manor house. The team of five sommeliers are happy to pair guests’ meals with a selection of wines from producers like Roumier, Petrus, Rousseau and Cristal. Some of the oldest bottles in the cellar include Château Lynch-Bages1945, Colares 1934 and Chateau d’YQuem 1961. Adare Manor has recently undergone one of the biggest renovations of its kind in Ireland in November 2017. adaremanor.com

The Stafford, London
This five-star luxury hotel tucked away in the heart of St James’s is home to vaulted wine cellars, a seemly backdrop for a private dinner or larger event. Built in the 17th Century by Lord Francis Godolphin and used as an air raid shelter during WWII, these cellars house over 8,000 bottles of the World’s finest wines. Master Sommelier, Gino Nardella, hosts wine tastings and wine-pairing dinners throughout the year. With over 40 years of experience at The Stafford alone, there isn’t a bottle he hasn’t tried in the irresistible vaults that lie beneath the hotel. thestaffordlondon.com

Inn at Dos Brisas, Washington, County Texas
This nine-room Relais & Châteaux resort (main picture) sits on 313 acres in the southern foothills of the Texas Hill Country and boasts a nationally-recognised wine programme now lead by the acclaimed Level 3 Advanced Sommelier Charlie Berg – who just joined the property from Eleven Madison Park. For an elevated gastronomy experience, guests can dine privately in the 7,000-bottle wine cellar and enjoy a full tasting or a la carte menu, with wine pairings complementing Chef Zachary Ladwig’s daily-changing menu, which is supplied by the property’s 42-acre USDA certified farm. dosbrisas.com
